(Walk-ins may be accommodated as time permits.)

The Southland Symphony Orchestra is a volunteer, community orchestra, providing an opportunity for qualified musicians to experience and perform live music of the highest quality. We welcome musicians of all ages and from all walks of life.

Requirements/Forms:

  1. If possible, please prepare a concerto mvt. or appropriate solo, and a sampling of any standard orchestral excerpts. Sight-reading selections will be provided at the audition.
  2. There is plenty of room for community musicians to participate. We especially need and welcome good string players (students are welcome)!
  3. Over 18 Application: http://southlandsymphony.com/files/sso_auditionapplication_pdf_fill_in.pdf
  4. Under 18 application: http://southlandsymphony.com/files/2014_sso_under18_application_pdf_fill_in.pdf

 Openings:

Auditions for all instruments (Volunteer/Community members)

  1. Strings - all sections
  2. Standard Woodwinds - sub/alternate list
  3. Bass Cl, Saxophone (only used occasionally)
  4. Brass - We already have regular brass principal players, but are seeking additional qualified, committed community members (we have a roster of players, but seek to create a permanent group). All auditionees will be considered for substitute list/alternates.
  5. Musicians of all ages (students - senior citizens) are eligible. Under 18 may require parent or guardian permission.

Principal String Positions (Compensated)

  1. Principal Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Bass.
  2. Compensated positions, $200/concert (budget permitting - we are in the midst of our season fund-raising campaign).
  3. Candidates must be highly qualified and commit to being present at all concerts for the season. Absence from a concert will jeopardize retention of the position.
  4. Rehearsal requirements: At a minimum, the dress rehearsal and at least 2 additional rehearsals required.  Additional (volunteer) rehearsal attendance is appreciated when possible, in order to build quality sections and provide consistent leadership.
  5. Bowings: Principals are expected to bow their respective parts, in cooperation with the concertmaster and conductor. When possible, concertmaster will provide Violin 1 bowings in advance via pdf.
